Indianapolis dentist enhances patient smiles with dental crown lengthening

Today’s advanced cosmetic dentistry technologies, techniques, and treatments can resolve an extensive array of imperfections in a patient’s smile. This includes gaps, crooked teeth, and teeth that may be too long or too short.

When a patient’s teeth appear too short or small, it may be because of several factors, such as:

Dr. Matthew Church Providing Dental Crown Lengthening
  • Altered passive eruption – the adult or permanent teeth did not erupt normally because of a problem in the bone development.
  • Gummy smile – the teeth may be of normal length, but the gums cover a greater portion of each tooth.
  • Tooth grinding – technically called bruxism, or persistent nail biting can wear down the crowns of teeth.

Dr. Matthew Church, an experienced Doctor of Dental Surgery, and our dedicated staff at Washington Street Dentistry in Indianapolis offer several dental crown lengthening solutions for patients who wish to correct the appearance of teeth that look too short. They include:

  • Cosmetic bonding – tooth-colored material is added in layers and hardened with a special light, to build up short teeth.
  • Dental crowns – appropriate in situations where one or several teeth are worn down or of odd length. A natural-looking dental crown, also called a cap, covers the affected tooth or teeth, changing the appearance of the visible portion.
  • Porcelain veneers – patients today can completely redesign the appearance of their smiles. Thin strips of porcelain, which reflects lights much like original tooth enamel, can be applied to the fronts of the teeth to “straighten,” lengthen, whiten, or even out the smile.
  • Crown lengthening surgery – also called a gum lift, reshapes soft tissues.

During crown lengthening surgery, Dr. Church sculpts the gum line to expose more tooth structure, adding length to the visible portion of the tooth. This safe and effective procedure has been utilized for years for patients with gum disease or dental health conditions. It is now a popular choice for aesthetic treatment. Excess gum tissue is excised, creating an even gum line. At times, small portions of bone near the gum line may also be removed.

A comprehensive consultation with Dr. Church will determine the most appropriate, customized treatment plan for each patient. Appointments may be scheduled by calling Washington Street Dentistry at 317-333-6788 or by requesting a particular time through our convenient online scheduling system.
